The Lightning standard is retiring, this time the confirmation comes directly from Apple. The company is preparing to bring the entrance USB-C also on its phones and we’ll probably see it for the first time on the iPhones 15 and 15 Pro to be unveiled next year.
At a conference hosted by the prestigious Wall Street Journal, Apple’s VP of marketing, Greg Joswiakconfirmed that the company does not intend to oppose the European directive on the so-called single connector. From 2024, all manufacturers are obliged to equip their devices with the USB-C input. This applies not only to phones, but also to cameras, consoles, remotes and a host of other products. In 2026, the obligation will even apply to laptops.
Today, Apple already uses the USB-C input on all its iPad tablets. Paradoxically, iPhones are out of the question, though they certainly would need them: what’s the point of recording videos in 8K when it takes tens of minutes, if not hours, to transfer the content to a PC – thanks to the inertia of the Lightning cables?
Greg Joswiak confirmed that Apple will abide by the law without raising any objections. “We always respect the regulations in force,” he added. However, the director has been careful not to confirm that the USB-C standard will be introduced in the next one iPhone 15. According to some rumors, USB-C will almost certainly be introduced at least on the next two top phones, the new iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra.
