What is COP27 and how could it change the course of humanity?

The 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) kicked off in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, on Sunday, 6th. Brazil can play an important role in this year’s edition and bring the fight against social and environmental inequalities and hunger on its agenda.

During the event, it is expected that new strategies to mitigate the effects of climate change will be considered and signed among participating countries.

What is COP27?

The acronym COP comes from the term “Conference of the Parties”, which is a general term that can denote the different types of committees formed to conclude international agreements.

But with the signing of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the acronym COP became closely linked to the theme.

Since then, the abbreviation has been accompanied by the number denoting the edition of the event that takes place each year, with exceptions.

Addressing various issues related to the protection of the environment, people and their footprints on the world, the conference changes city and country with every edition.

Not only countries and their representatives, but also groups advocating the interests of sectors such as fossil fuel energy production and environmental activists can attend the event.

This year, from November 6-18, these groups and countries will discuss the best actions, financing strategies to mitigate climate impacts, and sign new agreements to achieve goals for the coming years.

What will Brazil show at COP27?

Our country has a prominent name as the presidential adviser of COP27: Izabella Teixeira.

In an interview with Valor magazine, the former Environment Minister “underlined the need to transform the way we produce food and combine low-carbon agriculture with food security. Hungry”.

In addition, Brazil is expected to rise again by improving its gas emissions commitments and forest protection.

President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has been invited and will be accompanied by a delegation that will also include former Minister of the Environment and elected federal lawmaker Marina Silva (Rede). Greater importance in protecting Brazilian nature.

The expectation is that the elected government will initiate a new phase in public policies for environmental protection after the increase in deforestation in recent years.
