Windows 11 update to be the best operating system for gaming has a big problem

This week Microsoft released version 1.1 of DirectStorage, and the main innovation it includes is GPU decompression for PC gaming with Windows 11. This is another step towards reducing game loading times on modern PCs.

emphasize that Microsoft released DirectStorage earlier this year, but the developers asked for GPU decompression support, and now it ships with DirectStorage 1.1.

In a word, decompression in GPUs from Microsoft is to offload the work required to unpack the assets games (textures and other graphics) on the GPU instead of the CPU. In fact, the CPU is completely freed from unpacking tasks and this work is shifted to the GPU.

A demo by Microsoft showed that boot time without DirectStorage 1.1 was 2.36 seconds and maximum CPU usage reached 100%. Using this technology, the boot time was 0.8 seconds, and the maximum peak CPU usage was 15.08%.

“Typically, decompression work is done on CPU because compression formats have historically been optimized for CPUs only”explains Cassie Hof, Program Manager at Microsoft. “In DirectStorage 1.1, we are proposing an alternative method of bringing the decompression of these assets to the GPU, known as on-GPU decompression.”

Despite the fact that we are talking about the disappearance of the load time(we are talking about speed up to 200% more) on certain game screens PCThere is a big problem behind all this.

Zero compatibility with current Windows 11 PC games.

First of all, DirectStorage 1.1 must be supported by games, so developers must enable it. We are now talking about the fact that there is not a single compatible one.

Forgotten Impressions

The only one currently in development that includes this compatibility is Forspoken, and as most fans of the PC gaming world know, delayed until early 2023 (January 24). Despite all this, it is true that we are facing a great revolution in the world of video games, although, of course, its inclusion will be especially slow.
