Cariad, Volkswagen’s software division, has announced that it will use Qualcomm SOCs for all of the Group’s self-driving passenger cars (including Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche). According to German Handelsblatt, the contract runs between 2026 and 2031 and has a total value of one billion euros.

While VW has had close relationships with Mobileye for some time, it has yet to partner with Intel’s subsidiary. The company is the second German automaker after BMW to use Snapdragon Ride chips for autonomous driving systems. Mercedes-Benz has entered into a partnership with Nvidia.

In 2025, Volkswagen wants to offer a software platform where a single operating system can be used for all brands of the group through Cariad. A key feature of this ox is its level 4 capability for autonomous driving. At this level, the car must be fully self-driving. If a human driver does not adequately respond to a request for intervention, the vehicle can safely pull itself over the side.
