Luxury car and aircraft engine maker Rolls-Royce said on Monday that it had already conducted the first test of a modern aircraft engine powered by hydrogenwhich is a first in the sector and is a big step forward in the quest for zero emissions with a possible 2050 in mind.

This test was carried out on land with converted Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A aircraft engine that used green hydrogen created Energy wind and tide. And the fact is that the impact of current fuels is so negative that immediate changes are needed.

The results of this test they were very kind, since it does not produce waste emissions, but water, and this becomes a huge potential for future clean air travel. This was carried out at an open test site in the British Ministry of Defense area of Boscombe Down.

Note that this new product from Rolls-Royce goes hand in hand with easyJet, with which it has teamed upto demonstrate that hydrogen can safely and efficiently power aircraft engines.

More efficient passenger aircraft for a greener future

Hydrogen, which we also see in some new cars or even boilers, is one of the technologies that could help general industry and aviation in particular meet the zero emissions goal by 2050.

Of course, this is quite a challenge, since it will require a complete redesign of airframes and airport infrastructure. Earlier this year, a report by Airbus, another company pursuing this goal, argued that to obtain the energy equivalent of one liter of kerosene, at least 3,000 liters of hydrogen gas would be required.

Hydrogen is suitable not only for cars, but also for aircraft.

“Given the limitations on the volume of hydrogen storage and the limited power density of fuel cells, for long-distance transportation, gas turbines with gas A sustainable aviation policy (SAF) will remain the most likely solution going forward.”Rolls-Royce said in a statement.

In context, SAF is gas an alternative made from non-petroleum feedstocks. United Airlines is positioned as the leading company in its use. After their flight, the results obtained confirmed that the carbon dioxide emissions were 75% less than when flying on conventional fuel.

For its part, the Spanish company Iberia at the beginning of November 2021 used biofuel produced by Repsol for the first test flight from Madrid to Bilbao. This is not the same quality as SAF, but it demonstrates the sector’s global commitment.

Airbus, for their part, and Rolls-Royce, for their part, confirm that there’s still a long way to go before the tanks meet safety standards and guarantee the desired life cycle of 20,000 takeoffs and landings.
