40 year old lawyer Shot with his own gun on Monday afternoon (16) his mother doing an MRI examination in a laboratory located on Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio in central São Paulo. According to the police, the accident was caused by the magnetism of the clinical apparatus.

Leandro Mathias Novaes, who is also a pro-gun influencer on social networks, had a surgery on Wednesday (18) and will have another surgery on Thursday (19), according to UOL. His clinical condition is being considered serious and Novaes is in intensive care.

In a press release released this Thursday (19), CURA, the laboratory where the incident took place, said both the patient and attendant were “warned to remove all metal objects” and both signed an endorsement clause on the guidance.

How did the lawyer’s gun go off?

According to the incident report, when the MRI machine was turned on, the magnetic field created by the device’s large magnet moved the gun on Novaes’ waistband. The action triggered the bullet that hit the lawyer’s stomach.

The police investigation clarifies that the gun is registered and that Leandro has the authority to carry it. However, even though he had signed the magnetic field contraindication clause before entering the examination room, “the firearm was not mentioned by the attendant. you entered the object in the examination room with your decision” states the statement from CURA.

The lawyer who was shot maintains his @leandromathias_adv profile on TikTok with 7,700 followers, where he posts short videos of him carrying a gun and answers users’ questions on topics such as: “What should you do if you get caught with a loaded CAC gun?”.
