Intel announced at Intel Vision 2022 held in Dallas that Intel plans to launch a new generation of Infrastructure Processing Units every two years. Existing Oak Springs Canyon IPUs will be replaced by Hot Springs Canyon in 2023/2024 and a next-generation variant of the data center and cloud IPU in 2025/2026. Each new generation doubles the network bandwidth; from current 200 GbE to 400 Gb for the next generation and 800 Gb in four years.

An ipu from Intel is designed as a supporting chip for any advanced data center application. The chips take on certain tasks, including storage virtualization, network virtualization, and security, leaving other components of a data center available for other tasks.

Intel also releases an Infrastructure Programmer Development Kit (ipdk). This framework is designed for the implementation of IPUs in different networks. The blue camp cites storage networks, processing of cryptocurrencies, AI applications and firewall support as examples.
