Netflix is working on a new subscription that will show ads to lower the price. The plan should be introduced in the last three months of this year. The goal is to attract customers who find the ever-increasing prices too high.
The company has long said it will never show ads on its streaming service, but it has lost customers very hard. In the first quarter of 2022, the number of subscriptions decreased by a net 200,000, with an additional 2 million expected this quarter. As a result, the number of customers for the service dropped for the first time in more than a decade.
Netflix attributes this to account sharing. It is estimated that 222 million paying households share their accounts with 100 million non-paying households. The company wants to prevent this by enabling password sharing within only one household.
In the test markets of Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, it is possible to pay an additional fee to share passwords with two people outside the household. He said that when testing launches, it will wait for results before adding the option in other countries.
