The research evaluated 10,196 reptile species and was done in collaboration with 961 scientists from around the world between 2004 and 2019. The analysis was conducted through the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. .

According to the survey, about 1,829 different species are threatened. Most of the species at risk are concentrated in Southeast Asia, West Africa, northern Madagascar, northern Andes, and the Caribbean. Also, reptiles living in forests are at greater risk of extinction than those living in arid regions.

Threats to habitats

According to the analysis, the greatest threat to reptile species is the destruction of habitats through the expansion of agriculture, urbanization and logging. Hunting and fishing also have a strong negative impact, especially for crocodiles and turtles.

The researchers say that protecting habitats is one of the most important measures to protect these species. Research also shows that conserving areas inhabited by mammals, amphibians and birds has a positive impact on the conservation of endangered reptile species.
