A Shell survey of drivers shows that Tesla will likely be the next electric car, although Volkswagen and Hyundai are also gaining ground in popularity. An EV’s range in particular is currently a major limiting factor.

Based on the survey among drivers in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom, the popularity of Renault and BMW in particular appears to be declining. As of 2022, Renault and Toyota are no longer among the top 10 most popular electric car brands. The newcomers are Skoda and Kia, which are in 10th and 6th place respectively.

Shell also managed to find some constants about the work drivers do with electric cars. The vast majority of electric vehicle owners work in the information technology, technology and manufacturing industry or finance sector, all of which are of course very broad sectors. The vast majority of respondents are aged 45 and over, but it is doubtful whether this is a realistic reflection of the target group.

Finally, research shows that an EV range is still a limiting factor; 57 percent of respondents say this is the main problem in mass adoption of electric vehicles. Remarkably, this is mostly seen among the Dutch. With us, 80 percent of respondents researched the product range to purchase an electric vehicle; That was roughly 64 percent among the French and Germans.
