The problem with this type of study is that, at best, you can find a correlation, but not a causal relationship. That is, it is known that there is a connection, but the reasons are unknown.

Prevention of diabetes is listed as one of the benefits of coffee, but this is not certain. For this reason, the study now published in Medicine BMJ is a new argument in favor as it adds a different methodology to the equation: mendelian randomization. But let’s see what that means.

From harm to benefit of coffee

For a long time it was thought that coffee could cause cardiovascular diseases for his caffeine levels. In addition, there was a time when it was classified as carcinogenic. However, this information was later refuted, as it was found that the link between cancer and coffee consumption could be more related to the high temperature at which some people drink the drink, or its consumption along with other habits, such as smoking.

However, over time, many of the benefits of coffee have been studied, from the possible prevention of certain types of cancer to protection against cardiovascular attacks. Quite the opposite of what was thought at the time.

A definite connection was found with reduction in body fat and all the benefits that come with it. And this is where new research comes into play.

Observational studies already pointed to the same thing as the study just published. But this one works with Mendelian randomization, so closer to finding a causal relationship.

Mendelian randomization consists of measuring variations in genes with a known function to study the causes of a risk factor. In this case, for example, the selected genes were CYP1A2 and AHR. They are known because they determine the rate at which our body is capable of process caffeine. Certain variants of these genes slow down its processing so it stays in our body longer and we don’t need to drink a lot of coffee. Others, on the other hand, make us process it so quickly that we barely notice the effect and we need to take a lot to stay awake and active.

With the former, although it’s processed more slowly and you don’t have to drink as much, the immediate effect is that the caffeine stays in the body longer. That’s why they wanted to explore these options. Thus, it was clear that from 10,000 people trainedthose who had this slow processing variant tended to have lower body fat levels and less propensity to type 2 diabetes. Therefore, this time, a direct correlation was found with the persistence of caffeine in the blood, and not just an accident.

However, experts caution that this does not mean that coffee is a magic bullet for preventing diabetes. Not that it helped lower glucose levels in those already diagnosed with the disease. We just have another example of how this precious drink does so much more than just wake us up in the morning. It can also help us, along with other measures, to have healthier life.
