An email from Microsoft to Windows Insiders sparked some controversy on YouTube. The email explains the origins of Windows 11’s new Start menu design. He links to a YouTube video from last year that has suddenly gotten a lot of negative reaction lately.

The design of Windows 11’s start menu is said to be based on user feedback. In the video, Microsoft designers describe how a test group of Windows users created the new Start menu from paper models. It’s something many don’t like that the designers seem to heed the advice of this tinkerer group but don’t seem to take so many complaints from Insiders seriously.

Insiders openly state what they think about the story in the video’s comment section. Comments abound, such as “The Windows 11 start menu is absolutely awful” and “this is a completely new version of Windows 8”. Of course, we can no longer see how many dislikes the video itself has received, of course, but this number will probably be much more than 1100 ‘likes’.

The Windows start menu has been the subject of discussion for years. Since Windows 8’s Metro Start screen, things have never really gotten better, although Windows 10 seems to be on the right track again. Programs like Classic Shell (no longer active) and Start11 owe their existence to it. It is still unclear whether Microsoft plans to use other non-paper methods to learn about the needs of Windows users in the future.
