Brazil has recorded more than 700,000 deaths caused by covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. The number was reached between March 19-25 last week, according to data released by the National Council of Secretaries of Health (Conass); The number of confirmed deaths that have accumulated in the country has reached 700,239.

The total number of confirmed cases of the disease since 2020 is 37,258,663. These are the number of confirmed cases and deaths reported to health services; in practice, the numbers may be even higher, as not all cases of the disease are correctly detected.

Between 19 and 25 March, 322 deaths were confirmed – a far lower number than the pandemic peak that occurred in 2021, when more than 4,000 deaths were recorded in just one day.

In the data panel of the World Health Organization (WHO), Brazil appears as the second country with the highest total death toll, after the United States, which has already recorded more than 1.1 million deaths from the disease.

Since the start of vaccination against the disease in January 2021, covid-19 has been in a steady decline, but there are still vulnerable groups who need special care and extra boosters at immunization doses. Covid-19 vaccines are accepted as safe and effective by scientific consensus. In Brazil, vaccines can be obtained free of charge in the public health network (SUS).

In January 2023, WHO decided to maintain its status as a global health emergency for covid-19, but stated in a statement that the pandemic would be at a transition point.
