Chinese scientists at Sun Yat-sen University in Guagzhou have developed a contact lens. can measure intraocular pressure and administer medication glaucoma. The optical device has a compact design, is flexible, uses no batteries or wires and provides medication when needed.

According to research published Tuesday in the journal (17), Nature CommunicationThe wireless intraocular pressure sensing module performs tonometry via an ultra-sensitive energy transfer circuit that then delivers the drug into the aqueous chamber through an electric field process called iontophoresis.

How were the tests done with the theranostic lens?

To combine therapy and diagnosis called theranostics – such a device is capable of monitoring a particular condition and administering appropriate treatment. The theranostic contact lens developed by Cheng Yang and his team was tested in pig and rabbit eyes to detect changes in intraocular pressure.

During testing, the drug delivery module triggered the release of antiglaucoma drug through the corneal barriers into the anterior chamber of the eye, whenever your intraocular pressure reaches a high risk level.

According to the authors, fabrication of wireless theranostic contact lenses is a promising tool for the treatment of intraocular pressure and is compatible with existing large-scale manufacturing processes. However, more research will be needed before the platform moves to clinical trials in humans.
