More than 2,700 people were killed and 14,000 injured in a string of devastating earthquakes that shook southeast Turkey near the Syrian border and razed thousands of buildings as survivors remain sought after in moderately low temperatures.

In Syria, which has been in the midst of civil war for more than a decade, the affected area is split between the region controlled by the Bashar al-Assad government and the last opposition-controlled region of the country, surrounded by Russian-backed government forces.
