Although pet owners report positive impacts on their lives, such as increased positive emotions and friendships, the research found no significant link between pet ownership and well-being over time. Even after controlling for factors such as pet type, number of pets, or proximity to pets, the data showed no difference in happiness between pet owners and non-pet owners.
Commenting on the findings, William Chopik, associate professor at the university, said: “People say pets make them happy, but when we actually measure happiness it doesn’t.”
