“The Gamond family reports with great sadness the sad news that Benja has failed. The miracle did not happen. His efforts were as immense as his strength and heart, but not enough. We ask that you understand the moment and respect the pain of the family. The late Facu Gamond’s older brother thanked him from his Instagram account.

The Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO) also confirmed the death.

“It is pertinent to note that one of the victims (BG) was transported to Mexico City, where he died this Monday afternoon due to his injuries, so FGEO will request that the crime be reclassified before the judge. The prosecution said it was qualified murder rather than attempted murder.”

The judge, this Monday, qualified the detention that had already been made as legal and accepted the preventive detention measure, and also set 17 May 2023 as the hearing date to link the process (opening of the trial).

Two other tourists, Macarena Elía González, 29, and Santiago Lastra, 22, escaped danger.

While the teenagers were living with the aggressor in a place that was not originally from Chacahua, an argument ensued which ended when the alleged assailant pulled out his machete.

According to the local press, The people present tried to separate them, but the man managed to injure them in the head, hands and arms.

Another source reported that the mother of one of the teenagers stated that they were attacked from behind.

Local residents transported the attacked tourists by boat to the town of El Zapotalito, where Civil Protection officers arrived and took them to medical centers in Puerto Escondido to seek medical attention.

According to the municipal government of Villa de Tututepec (to which Lagunas de Chacahua belongs) and the community of Chacahua Isla, the attacker is a young man of Guerrero descent who came to the area in search of work.

The young Argentines had been on vacation two days before the event, so they didn’t know many people in what is a small town where local and foreign tourists come to enjoy the beach.
