Alex Guzmán (Manolo Cardona) has a lot of questions about his life and what happened while he was in prison. But he knows something clearly and without hesitation. That he did not kill his sister Sarah (Jimena La Madrid), although for this reason he was sentenced to eighteen years in prison. Accused of a crime he did not commit, Alex decided to make every effort necessary not only to find the culprit. Also to clear his name and reveal his sister’s secret(s).
Who killed Sarah? has become one of the most popular series on Netflix since its premiere. But as it develops and its plot becomes more complex and melodramatic, it gradually loses its ability to surprise. This new millennium version of The Count of Monte Cristo, with elements of a thriller and a twist to the unsettling procedural, fizzles out.
And this happens when everything around Sarah becomes more mysterious, confusing and less effective. If in previous seasons the mysteries surrounding an unsolved murder were confusing, then in the third, final, they fall into boredom. Especially when Alex’s thoughtful revenge, who has dedicated his life to taking over a powerful family, turns into something more complicated.
Of course, this is inevitable when a show bases its effectiveness on surprise. Starting with the premise of an insidious murder with multiple possible culprits, the series moved to its finale amid red herrings. But as the mystery of Sarah grew more and more absurd—or, at any rate, unsolvable— Netflix series has dropped significantly. This is despite retaining in the new chapters his curious sense of drama and suspense. But the ending turned out to be one of the most curious combinations of a scenario without stimulus and an absurd twist. And to this we should add the unexpected participation of a famous actor.
Chaotic puzzle state Who killed Sarah?
For three seasons Netflix series survives unlikely situations in his attempt to uncover the identity of the unnamed killer. But what was a genius hook in the early episodes turned into a burden in the latter. Especially when the argument began to show the edges of a meaningless premise that developed at random and randomly. From Alex’s skills as a hacker (ridiculously explained in the third season) to the final answer to the main mystery. Who killed Sarah? the result was a combination of unfinished storylines with an almost absurd ending.
The show’s ability to move from high-profile corporate intrigue to unexpected pregnancies, hints of debauched relationships, and mental breakdown was unnerving. To make matters worse, when the third season was fast-forwarded to an abrupt resolution. The series showed that it used painful plots or, at best, with a twisted sense of mystery to grab the attention of the public. But he never managed to build a coherent plot that allows him to understand the idea of Sarah and the crime that surrounded her as a whole.
In essence, the end of the series is a combination of the many possibilities offered by the script to every crazier one. Sarah’s killer never existed because the character actually committed suicide. But he, having gone through the tragic, incomprehensible and stormy history of which the series never gave the slightest hint. In other words, the great fiasco Who killed Sarah? He had to use the script as a huge trap without depth or meaning.
Death in the middle of the web
The series, in which it is impossible to distinguish between a diagnosis of schizophrenia and a diagnosis of dissociative disorder, argues that Sarah suffered somewhere in between. In fact, the plot is so sloppy that for most of the season’s episodes hints that the character suffered from both. Or that both diseases are one and the same. As if that wasn’t enough, the whole plot concludes with a new character, a kidnapping, and a hidden story.
And it’s here when Who killed Sarah? reaches its insane level. Psychiatrist Reynaldo Gomez decides to kidnap Sarah to use her as a guinea pig for a personal project. A strange initiative that includes “cure” for homosexuality and schizophrenia. As if all of the above wasn’t enough, Reynaldo is played by French actor Jean Reno, who creates an absurd role more like parody and twisted humor than drama. As if in an unintentional satire, Reno becomes the center of an unexpected and twisted side story.
In the end,Sarah commits suicide after he was raped and made the unwitting test subject of a delusional medical project. How does this important discovery tie in with all the previous seasons? None, or at least not in the central part that the series picks up and analyzes in its previous installments. To Who killed Sarah? It turned out to be the craziest secret of all. One that destroyed the entire previous argument and betrayed the basic meaning – if it ever existed – of its entire premise.
