Ryan Gosling has an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role as Ken in Barbie, but this almost didn’t happen. Gosling initially turned down the role of the character, which may become one of his defining moments today.
“There were good reasons why I initially turned down the role of Ken. Problems on the agenda, personal issues. Then, a few months later, I called my agent and asked who they had cast as Ken, and they said, “Greta.” [Gerwig] He wants it to be you.” He talks about all this in an interview Diversitywhere they talk about the actor’s renewed success following his Barbie stint and subsequent nomination.
But the reality is that Greta Gerwig wrote the character of Ken with Ryan Gosling in mind, with no possible replacement in mind. “We knew there was a scheduling problem, but we also knew it had to be him,” explains the director Barbie. “At one point I told him that I saw the future and that in it he was Ken. He thought it was funny, but I also think he saw the same future as me.”
Margot Robbie, who plays Barbie in the film and has the same agent as Ryan Gosling, also comments on the incident in an interview. Diversity: “He definitely turned down the role, but we couldn’t let that happen. There was simply no other version of Ken. Greta and I are extremely determined and persistent people. Without Gosling the film would not have been made,” he explains. “Every time he said he wasn’t going to do it, we said, ‘Yeah, we’re going to do it, and it’s going to be a lot of fun.’
And of course, Ryan Gosling eventually agreed. “Who am I to disagree with Greta? [Gerwig] and Margot [Robbie]? They had a clear vision and they believed in it. And they believed that I should do it more than I believed that I shouldn’t. […] At some point I began to understand that they were seeing something that I did not understand. I thought it was such a good role that any talented actor could play it. Yes, I understand everything now, but it took me a while to understand it.”

Once Ryan Gosling agreed to become KenBoth Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie began developing the character’s origin. And to achieve this, they imagined what Ryan Gosling’s version of Ken would be like on Instagram.
“I sent them a magazine cover Muscles and fitness from the ’90s that I remember my parents having when I was little,” Gosling explains. “My parents were bodybuilders for a while. Next came the hard part: keeping Ryan Gosling fit Barbie. Four hours of exercise a day, dance lessons and a very strict diet. “I lived by not eating anything, it was practically just coffee.”
As for Ken’s signature blonde hair in the film, it was a last-minute decision by Gosling after several trials with a wig reminiscent of a young Robert Redford.
Ryan Gosling received his third Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Film Barbie. In 2016 he was nominated for La La Land and in 2006 Half Nelson. Until now he has never been a winner.
