Is he Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) or not, the Kwisatz Haderach the Fremen are waiting for? Dune: part 2 presents the mystery just as writer Frank Herbert did. Namely: how could a leader with superior genetics, created Bene Gesserit, as a result of a biological disaster. And even the fact that everything connected with his very existence is a self-fulfilling prophecy, thanks to the efforts of Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson in the film adaptation).
Part of the success Dune As a saga, it lies in its ability to subvert the so-called “hero’s journey.” The literary figure, introduced by Joseph Campbell, indicates a journey in which a character destined to become a hero tests his abilities. Which, as he grows stronger, wiser, and eventually achieves the fullness of all the promises – both physical and intellectual – that his heroism contains. But Herbert decided that his protagonist would not reach the highest point of his abilities to achieve his goal.who will bring him home.
Instead, he imagined a man who, in the words of the writer, “played God.” Which ultimately led him to the darkest points of greed and turned him into a tyrant. All shrouded in doubt as to whether the Bene Gesserit’s genetic manipulation had achieved its goal.. Or, on the contrary, Lady Jessica’s love and disobedience caused the terrible fate that doomedl The Known Universe is an endless, cruel and merciless holy war.
A unique story for a select few
Both in books and in films Gender is the result of extensive genetic experimentation carried out by the Bene Gesserit.. A brotherhood that arose 10,000 years before the one narrated in Dune He actively participated in the Butlerian Jihad. In fact, thanks to them, humanity was able to resist Thinking Machines – a type of aggressive artificial intelligence. The first members of the Order developed psychic abilities that brought victory to humanity. But it also allowed them to access entirely new dimensions of their minds.
One of them was the study Other memories. That is, the collective memories contained in your brain. But for some reason, they could only see what happened to their ancestors. Although the Melange spice allowed them to unlock cellular memory – and continued to do so in the future – the memories of the male side were inaccessible. Therefore, the Brotherhood decided to use their powers of foresight and the prophetic gift of the Reverend Mothers to fill the gap in information. Specifically, harnessing the abilities and wisdom of men throughout their genetic line.
The solution was to initiate a genetic reproduction program that would ultimately create a human being capable of manifesting Bene Gesserit gifts. Which would allow him to build bridges between space and time. Moreover, that he will be under control and will respond only to the Order. The goal is for this creature to have access to Other memories from the male side and integrated them into the female side. So it will be both. a member of the Order, a Reverend Mother, a Mentat capable of mental summation, and a Guild Navigator.. In other words, he is a high-ranking member of the space guild who, thanks to his appearance, could navigate the known universe. All previous ones synthesized into a single being.
Gender, Lady Jessica’s decision, not fate
In the book, as well as in Denis Villeneuve’s films, Paul Atreides is the result of an accident. Or rather, disobedience to his mother. Kwisatz Haderach, according to the Bene Gesserit, was to become the son of the first-born son of Leto Atreides. (Oscar Isaac in the records) and a member of House Harkonnen. The pair would finally produce a messiah who, under the control of the Bene Gesserit, would be destined to rule.

But Jessica disobeyed his orders and gave birth to Leto’s male child. As a Bene Gesserit, the character has the ability to change the gender of the fetus he or she carries at will. So this was not an accident, the result of an alternative plan or ambition. Jessica herself explains that she wanted to comfort the Duke (who was widowed and suffering recent family losses) and that it was an act of love. So the messiah, as the Sisters imagined him, is not the young firstborn of the House of Atreides.
However, the Bene Gesserit’s gift of foresight showed that Paul would have influence in the future. In fact, due to Jessica Kwisatz’s decision, Haderach is no longer in the service of the Order of Psychic Women. So, in a sense, Paul really does what is expected of him. Although for personal reasons – and out of revenge – and not because of the Brotherhood’s desire for power.
