Speaking with Entertainment Weekly the interpreter Alicia Vikander commented on the state of production of Tomb Raider 2 who, in his opinion, ended up in a kind of limbo. Since the production of the first film was by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Amazon’s takeover of the house, according to Vikander, has brought the project to a halt.

Here are the actress’s words:

With Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, I have no idea what’s going to happen. This is a political issue at the moment. Misha (Green ed) and I would be ready for another Tomb Raider movie, but that’s something that’s in the hands of others.

Some time ago, Vikander himself had indicated that he hoped for a sequel. Below are his statements:

Before Covid I would have said yes, and at the moment I still think it is possible. The green light hasn’t been given yet, but the script is in the works and I think everyone is excited to be able to return to explore Lara Croft’s universe. Right now Misha is working on the script and I look forward to reading something soon.

The character of Lara Croft made her debut in the first Tomb Raider video game in 1996. Croft went on to star in a film series starring Angelina Jolie. After the 2018 Tomb Raider reboot, Croft’s character was played by Alicia Vikander. Although the film made about $274 million at the worldwide box office, MGM did not immediately proceed to produce a sequel.

The movie about Lara Croft starring Alicia Vikander is available on Netflix.
