The Royal Opera House is pleased to announce the debut of the 2022/23 film season with Madam Butterfly by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier, broadcast live on Tuesday, September 27 in more than 850 cinemas in 26 countries around the world (list of Italian cinemas coming soon on nexodigital.it).

Madama Butterfly has been performed more than 420 times by the Royal Opera, making it the ninth most performed opera in the company’s repertoire. From his first performance at Covent Garden in 1905, a year after its premiere at the Scala in Milan, Puccini’s timeless story has captivated audiences. With a score that contains some of the most heartbreaking music the composer has ever written – from the famous Butterfly aria, “Un bel dì, we will see”, to the “Chorus with closed mouth” – Madama Butterfly remains today. one of the most popular Italian operas.

The Royal Opera embarked on a year-long preparatory work, listening to new voices to work on a staging true to the spirit of the original and more authentic in its portrayal of Japan. Conversations between the Royal Opera House team, academics, operators, performers and experts from the Asian world inspired subtle but significant changes in various aspects of the work, including makeup, wigs, costumes and movements. The production, accompanied by an exhibition contextualizing the complex history and context of the work, was inaugurated with great success in July 2022.

The theatrical event will be performed by an international cast: acclaimed Italian soprano Maria Agresta as Cio-Cio-San, American tenor Joshua Guerrero as Lieutenant BF Pinkerton, Spanish baritone Carlos Álvarez as Sharpless and English mezzo Christine Rice as Suzuki.
