How many options does faith have? It’s one of the questions that go through Prodigy, from Netflix. A film that was first presented as a sinister story, and after viewing must be characterized as poetic history. This does not take away the gloom of what was said, but more accurately in relation to the artistic treatment and interpretation of Florence Pugh and Keel Lord Cassidy, the main characters.

Florence Pugh plays Lib Wright, a nurse assigned to keep an eye on what’s happening to a little girl. This girl is Anna O’Donnell, played by Keela Lord Cassidy, who is reported to have not eaten any food for four months. The amazing thing is that he manages to stay on his feet. This draws the attention of the church, which approaches her as a new saint among the people.

Through both characters, with religious power as an axis, Prodigy lets netflix count a story that revolves around the pulse between science and faith. This axis allows her to refer to other topics such as motherhood, feminism, the weight of spoken word and myths in society, among others. Each of them is suggested or approached by a subtle language in which color, silence and compositions are of remarkable value.

cinematic language
in Prodigy Netflix

Sebastian Lelio is one of the most famous names in the modern film industry. Although his name cannot be easily mentioned in everyday conversation, he is an Academy Award winner (fantasy woman2017) and director known in Prodigy from Netflix. How? Through his tongue. In this play landscape and silence play an important role. The director is interested in being active subjects.

Maybe that’s why many of his shots are wide, as if he wanted the viewer to be able to hide behind a tree or some bush and thus enjoy what is happening. Not much is happening in terms of actions, but it is happening with human relationships. This explains the value of the dialogues and various characters presented throughout the story.

Between cinematic language accompanied by prominent costume direction and script lines, he weaves his own frame of reference. He describes Lib Wright’s commitment to Do your job in a world hostile to women. She was lucky that on this trip she ended up experiencing some sort of personal vindication by standing up to the fate assigned to Anna O’Donnell. Assigned, yes. It reads well. Because this girl, who because of her religious power is seen as a connection with the deity, has no more power to decide what happens to her.

Florence Pugh
and the symbolic freedom of the film

Five men on the jury analyze what is happening with O’Donnell from a religious point of view. Wright has to present the results of his observation along with the nun, who acts as a bridge between the two parties: the scientist represented in the nurse and the deity who is in her clothes, as well as these gentlemen. These are characters who move in and out naturally and imperceptibly, in transitions where the camera follows them like a shadow.

Taking the symbolic and metaphorical games offered by Sebastian Lelio, Prodigy Netflix can be seen as a prism. When light passes through it, different objects are illuminated. This film is a critique of the divine faith, different religions, the weight of men over women, even the role of the press and many other issues. With a simple story, Florence Pugh helps the viewer discover the various possibilities of these themes through various facts.

Thanks to him, culture opens up not only at a certain historical moment and in an area that seems abandoned by all God. It also shows the growth of character, that is, loyalty to everything that surrounds her, poetry. Florence Pugh plays a bird that is about to get out of its cage. Its context is marked by tradition, the weight of stories (“without stories we are nothing”) and an ignorance that is unable to question them.

But he has a weakness

She is the one who realizes how grim the situation is and how vulnerable the women involved are. She also confronts her nurse codes to make way for a man. It is she who discovers what is happening to Anna O’Donnell and decides to take sides, even if it goes against the flow of divine faith and puts her in danger. One of the last images of the film serves to recreate the above. Lib Wright, a nurse, appears before a male jury with burnt hands. A metaphor that can be used to describe how, in her actions, she puts her own beliefs at risk in order to make way for others.

Although the pace of the story is a weak point. Sometimes, some parts of the story take longer than they should. If the viewer is distracted, Prodigy This may disappoint you, because this is a production in which details play a key role. The risk, if this happens, is to miss the author’s film. He has an outstanding acting and an engaging and compelling script. This may not be the kind of movie that can be turned off at the weekend or after dark. But this is a story that in another time could return the value of cinema to the viewer.
