In 1991 (1993 there were no simultaneous releases before in Europe), SEGA released a console add-on called SEGA-CD, here SEGA Mega CD. It was essentially a CD drive with some extra chips to improve the graphics and sound power of the original Mega Drive.
It wasn’t as successful as expected because the console + CD player combination was expensive, and the PlayStation 1, which already included a built-in CD player, got all the attention. 30 years later SEGA announces Mega Drive Mini 2 console, which is basically a Mega Drive with a Mega-CD. The term Mini is put by the press because it is not in the official name. But this a tiny console a little bigger than the palm of your hand, like its predecessor SEGA Mega Drive Mini.
The base model is just a console and controller, as seen in the video. The Japanese company is also going to sell a SEGA Mega CD accessory with a CD and a miniature cartridge, as seen in the opening photo of the news. But these are just nostalgic decorative elements, they don’t work.
The console uses emulation to run games from different computers. FROM games on disk like the mythical Sonic CD, arcade conversions like Virtua Racing. And even titles never released for the original Mega Drive such as Fantasy Zone. He also announcedunexpected name in development“.
