The loss of the venue for the 2027 Pan American Games, which was earmarked for Barranquilla, left Rodríguez, who made no reference to the issue in his resignation letter, on a tightrope.

“The budget of the federations affiliated with the athletes of the country, who are considered the world’s ambassadors of peace, has been strengthened, allowing them to continue the country’s highly successful sports development. Additionally, rapprochement with the Colombian Olympic Committee allowed us to work together to propose strategies that will strengthen Colombian sports,” the minister said in his resignation letter.

The controversy over choosing the new Minister of Sports is wide-ranging. One of those who may come Alexander López Maya, who was elected senator from the Historical Pact in 2022, but lost his seat by the decision of the Council of State due to double militancy. He was already in Congress between 2002 and 2014.

López Maya is a lawyer from the University of San Buenaventura, specializing in public policies and management of State social enterprises from the Universities of Javeriana and Jorge Tadeo Lozano.

Another name in the deck is Ana Dayana Cordoba Palacios is a social leader who has been working with black communities for nearly 13 years.

Lina María Barrera, who was deputy minister of Sports when Ernesto Lucena was in this portfolio, would also be one of the candidates for the position vacated by Rodríguez.

Helmut Bellingrodt, the first Colombian Olympic medalist in history, also stood out at the time: he won two silver medals in shooting, in Munich in 1972 and Los Angeles in 1984. He was also the former mayor of Cali, Jorge Iván Ospina.
