KLO-001. This is a reference to a new (and mysterious) product that Nintendo has registered with the FCC. It’s not a Nintendo Switch 2, but this reference, which appears to have rolled off the production line, tells us a lot more than it initially appears. First of all, we know from the way Nintendo names its products that this new product belongs to an entirely new category. And how do we know? The company uses “001” codes used on devices in new product categories. The switch is called HAC-001, and the DS is called NTR-001.

What’s more, we know it’s not a console. The product is registered as a “wireless device,” not as a “wireless gaming console,” which is what all Nintendo gaming devices get. And it’s not some new controller or a new version of the Joy-Con. This is a completely new mysterious product.

Along with the registration is a basic schematic of this new device, which only increases its mystery: it is a square-shaped product with rounded corners, with no details, no indication of whether it has a screen. In fact, we don’t even know if it is an accessory for the current console or something completely unrelated to the Nintendo Switch.

MmWave Sensor in Mysterious Nintendo Device

There’s hardly any technology to highlight in Nintendo’s CLO-001: It doesn’t have 5GHz or 6GHz Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.. But surprisingly, it has 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and a 24 GHz mmWave sensor. This only adds to the speculation about the device, as it could be some sort of motion tracking device in the form of an accessory for some of their consoles.

And the 24 GHz mmWave sensor can be used to track movement or analyze certain gestures near the device. It’s similar to using a connected home device like presence sensors or those built into some mobile devices to detect when we’re near them, but it’s very strange to see it on a console or an accessory designed for them. Maybe on some VR devices, but that’s far from all that Nintendo has implemented so far.

Without a doubt, Nintendo’s LO-001 is one of the company’s biggest mysteries at the moment. And it may still take us some time to figure out what it is and what it will be used for.
