Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey created a virtual reality headset equipped with single detonators: essentially it is capable of: kill right away who is wearing it. To activate the detonators, a simple input from the game screen is enough, which is sent when the player loses the game and thus game over.
The eccentric entrepreneur was inspired by the NerveGear from Sword Art Onlinethe famous anime and manga series that tells of some players who are trapped in an MMORPG and in fact are unable to leave the game, on pain of instant death in the real world.
Luckey’s invented viewer is also able to instantly kill the player when their avatar dies. The headset is equipped with three explosive charges that are activated when the game screen displays a precise frequency of red.
“The idea of linking life to that of our avatars has always fascinated me,” confessed the co-founder of Oculus, a leading company in the production of VR headsets now owned by Meta. “This immediately raises the stakes. People have to think radically about their game strategy.”
Palmer Luckey however, he explained that the headset is a simple experiment and will never be tested on a real person. Even Luckey himself has never tested the headset, which, moreover, can be subject to bugs and therefore kill the wearer at any time, even in the absence of a game is over.
Although in Sword Art Online the headset kills players with a microwave bombardment, Luckey explained that he was unable to recreate the technology envisioned by the series. Therefore, the solution is even more bloody than that of the anime and seems to come rather straight from one of the movies of the Saw the Riddler saga. In this regard: the combination of virtual reality and Saw would not be bad, who knows if in the next movie with Tobin Bell …
