Many users nintendoswitch and other consoles from the Japanese firm, such as the 3DS or Wii U, have received bad news recently: a serious vulnerability affects several of the most important games. The security vulnerability is so well known that, if exploited, it could provide “full control” over devices.

As reported Eurogamerthe vulnerability was originally reported in 2021 under the title ENLBufferPwn. However, it didn’t really take off until Nintendo started quietly updating major affected games lately. According to said carrier, it scored 9.8 out of 10 in CVSS 3.1, which speaks volumes about its seriousness.

A security breach in Nintendo Switch, 3DS, and Wii U games allowed remote code execution on consoles. To do this, it was only necessary to share an online game session with the attacker. It is important to note that when combined with other security flaws in the operating system a hacker can gain full access and control over an infected device. What does it mean? So that he can not only steal sensitive information from the device, but also take screenshots or audio from a distance.

For now, Nintendo has released fixes for several affected Switch games.. Such are the cases Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, WEAPON, platoon 2, platoon 3, Super Mario Maker 2 D Nintendo Switch Sport. There was also a pretty bright case as it has been updated in recent weeks Mario Kart 7, for 3DS for the same reason. An important fact, given that the game was launched in December 2011 and has not received a new version since May 2012.

The situation caused several criticisms from the Japanese company.. The fact is that although several users reported the vulnerability, which was fixed by Nintendo, the lack of information about its severity caused a lot of dissatisfaction. Asians have been updating affected Nintendo Switch games throughout this year, but without mentioning the ENLBufferPwn patch.

But the most infamous so far has been decision not to release security patches for vulnerable Wii U games. Although it launched in 2012 and was discontinued in 2017, it still has a significant user base. Nintendo’s failure for the time being to update its games to be free of the vulnerability has prompted third parties such as Pretendo Network to launch their own solutions.

The question also remains as to whether other Nintendo Switch games, apart from those already refurbished, may have been subject to this inconvenience. Or it may reappear in future handheld games.. So far, the Japanese have decided not to reveal details about it.

If you have any of the above games on your console and have ignored the updates that have been released in the past few months, the best recommendation is this: overtake and avoid possible headaches.
