If you want to send large files, you can’t always do it via email. Fortunately, there are many ways to transfer files, including WeTransfer. In this article, we list some options.
WeTransfer
One of the reasons to get excited about WeTransfer is that the interface is simple enough for anyone to understand. just click the button Add file, enter your email address, the recipient’s address, and of course the accompanying message, and you’re done. The recipient will receive a link to download the file (or files) for a period of 10 days. After that, they are removed from the server.
With WeTransfer, you can send free files up to 2GB at a time. More is also possible (and a longer storage period), but you’ll pay for it.
DropSend
An alternative to WeTransfer is DropSend. This service is almost identical to the service mentioned above, the difference is that you get twice the capacity, i.e. 8 GB. Files are kept slightly less (i.e. 7 days). The interface is equally simple, you just need to enter a security code. Of course it’s not a big hurdle. The downside is that there is a limit to the free usage of this service. However, you must create an account to use this service. You can only send free files five times a month. If you want more, you should get a paid account.
SendAnywhere
Another service for sending large files, but in a completely different way, is SendAnywhere. With SendAnywhere, you don’t need to enter an email address and there is no limit to the size of files you can send. Disadvantage? Your files stay online for up to ten minutes and will be deleted if you don’t use the 24-hour option. When you upload a file you get a code. Anyone with this code can download the files. But you don’t have to wait long because you only have a few minutes.
Dropbox
Dropbox is much more than a file transfer platform, but it is often forgotten that it is one of its capabilities. The basic version of Dropbox gives you 2GB of storage. If you want to store more files online, you can choose from a subscription for around 12 euros. For this, you get 2TB of storage at your disposal.
It is a handy website with apps for Windows, Android, iOS and OS X so you can always access your files from any platform.
Create a free account on dropbox.com by pressing the button Register Click and fill in your information. After that you can choose to download Dropbox as a program, but you can continue to use the web version as well. Upload a file by clicking the icon of a sheet of paper with a plus sign in it. After the file is uploaded, you will see it in the appropriate folder. Hover your mouse over the file and click To share Click to share the file. You can choose to enter the recipient’s email address via Dropbox or, for example, manually copy the link and send it via Facebook. The recipient simply clicks the link to view or download the file.
By default, the download ends after 24 hours. If you have a pro account, you can change the expiration date by clicking the gear.
TransferXL
TransferXL is a service very similar to WeTransfer. Even the look of the website is somewhat reminiscent of its rival, though with minor differences in how it works. A big advantage of TransferXL is that you don’t need an account to send files, just like with WeTransfer. And it’s not trivial: even the free version of TransferXL has no file size limit.
Go to transferxl.com and click on the icon in the middle of the screen. Attaching a file† Select and click the file on your computer. Openby † Controlkey (or command On Macs), you can upload multiple files at once. Here you can follow the same steps as with WeTransfer (your own email address, the recipient’s email address, possibly a message), but share the file via Facebook or Twitter, or copy the link and send it to the recipient in any way. Receiving is the same as WeTransfer: click the link and download the file.
gmail
It is often forgotten that you can also send large files via Gmail. By default, you can only attach files with a maximum size of 25 MB as an attachment to an email, but you can send larger files if you are using the Google Drive cloud service. The recipient will then receive a link to download the file, a Gmail account is not required for this. Google Drive has a maximum file size of 10 gigabytes, which is enough for even your largest movie files.
Telegram
You can also send large files for a while with the chat service Telegram. The limit was always 1.5GB, but since an update in 2020 it is 2GB. This distinguishes Telegram from WhatsApp, where you can send files up to 16MB.
The files are kept in the cloud so you can access the files from any device with the chat app.
Firefox Send?
You may be missing Firefox Send in this article. This tool allowed you to send encrypted files, especially useful for sending privacy sensitive files. Even Mozilla couldn’t see the content you shared, as the packaged files this tool carries are end-to-end encrypted. Ironically, Mozilla stopped the service as early as September 2020 because it was used to distribute malware.
