Legislators in the US state of Florida as a result of a mass election. They are one step away from making a decision to allow the use of spent radioactive material in the construction of new roads. This is phosphogypsum, which is a by-product of the mining industry in the production of fertilizers. This legislative adventure could endanger people’s lives.

The fact is that phosphogypsum is recognized by the American environment as a radioactive contamination by the Environmental Protection Agent. It contains a small amount of radium and uranium. First of all, the use of phosphogypsum in construction projects in the US has been limited. Existing regulations require that it be stored separately from other materials so that it does not endanger human health. The fact is that uranium and radium are released over time with the release of gaseous radon. This gas causes exclusion of cancer.

The law, the adoption of which can legalize phosphogypsum as a material for road construction, has a good purpose – it encourages the beneficial use of waste. But environmental experts have already sounded the alarm – they are sure that accepting the consequences can make roads dangerous, and workers of road construction companies will be the first to be hit. The public and drivers are also at high risk of getting cancer. This topic was bothered by the most widespread and the media, not so a few years ago it was not a project clear.
