AI industry leaders sounded the alarm again as the AI Security Center, an organization with the mission of “risk reduction on a societal scale artificial intelligence“He called for being very careful with AI and compared it to a nuclear war.
The signatories are who’s who in the AI industry, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind head Demis Hassabis. Turing Award-winning researchers Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, who are widely regarded as the godfathers of modern AI, also named it after themselves.
The 22-word statement, shortened to be as acceptable as possible, reads: “Reducing the risk of AI extinction must be a global priority along with other societal risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”
Since there are many opinions, the short new statement is intended to show a common concern about the risks of AI, even if the parties do not agree on what they are.
“AI experts, journalists, politicians and the public are increasingly discussing a wide range of important and urgent risks of AI,” the preamble to the statement reads. “However, it can be difficult to express concern about some of the larger risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence. The brief statement below is intended to overcome this hurdle and open up discussion. It is also intended to create a common understanding among the growing number of experts and public figures who are also serious about some of the biggest risks of advanced AI.”
