During various experiments, the scientists evaluated the effect of cutting methods and the material from which the sheet was made on the release of microparticles into the environment. The simulation revealed that between 14 million and 79 million microplastic particles can be produced annually in cut products on a plastic sheet; by weight – up to 50 grams of wood. When cutting on a board, at least 4 times more microparticles are formed.

Food containing microplastic particles was given to laboratory rats, but no significant effects were noted on connective tissue cells, the same goes for wood particles.

Control tests were done for 72 hours, but it’s not clear how the particles might affect other cells in the body of mice or humans, including time intervals of 3 days rather than years.
