In a study led by the University of Sydney, scientists found that higher levels of overall physical activity in humans were associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This is especially true for moderate to high-intensity physical activity.

The new study analyzed data from 59,325 adults from the British Biobank. Experts observed these people for 7 years. Also, people with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes due to heredity are 2.4 times more likely to develop the disease than people with a low risk of developing diabetes.

Researchers also found that more than 1 hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day was associated with a 74% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes (compared to those who exercised less than 5 minutes a day).

Moderate-intensity physical activity, such as gardening, includes brisk walking. In terms of high-intensity physical activity, it can be running, heavy work in the garden (for example, digging a bed), cycling uphill or at high speed, aerobic dancing.

The results of the research were published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
