Sea cucumber is a gelatinous marine animal, it belongs to the class of invertebrates from the echinoderm type, which, according to scientists, contains substances necessary for the stated purposes. As a New Atlas columnist notes, China has long used sea cucumbers to fight inflammation and disease. The Chinese call this animal hai shen, which roughly means “sea ginseng.”
A type of sea cucumber, Holothuria scabra, or sand cucumber, was used in the study. The collected invertebrates were cooked in various ways: sun drying without salt, sun drying with salt, sun drying and smoking. Powder was prepared from each product. The researchers extracted collagen from sea cucumbers and added it to each formulation.
Sun-dried salted sea cucumber plus collagen appeared to cause the strongest suppression of AGEs – when the harmful end products of glycation are formed – the synthesis of proteins, fats and sugars in the blood. According to the scientists, this indicates that the method of preparing sea cucumber is crucial for unlocking its medicinal properties.
According to the researchers, Holothuria scabra could be a promising source of natural antioxidants and antiglycating agents that could be used as a means to slow the development of type 2 diabetes.
