Swimming in lakes can put you at risk of contracting dangerous infectious diseases such as hepatitis A, cholera, typhoid and paratyphoid A and B. This was reported by Mikhail Lebedev, a leading specialist of the CMD, Rospotrebnadzor Center for Molecular Diagnostics.
Viral hepatitis A, known as Botkin’s disease, can be transmitted through water and is accompanied by severe symptoms and liver damage. This disease is ubiquitous, especially in hot countries and areas with low hygiene standards. However, there is an effective measure of protection – vaccination against hepatitis A.
Cholera is the most dangerous intestinal disease transmitted through water. Outbreaks of this disease still occur, especially in warm climates. Cholera is also prevented by vaccination. In addition, dangerous diseases such as typhoid and paratyphoid A and B can be transmitted through water.
Lebedev emphasizes that it is safe to swim only on specially equipped beaches. Do not ignore the warnings about the swimming ban placed near some reservoirs.
If signs of illness such as fever, skin rash or general malaise occur after bathing, you should seek immediate medical attention. It is important not to self-medicate on the advice of friends or on information from the Internet.
