Dermatologist Elena Moshkova warns of the possible dangers of using certain cosmetics during the hot summer season. She explains that some of these products contain photosensitizers that make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. The skin’s response to these substances depends on many factors, such as the amount and type of product applied, the exposure time and the individual characteristics of the body. The doctor warns that the use of such cosmetics can increase the risk of burns and allergic reactions, such as redness, burning, itching, swelling and blistering.
He also notes that certain plant extracts, such as those from umbrella plants, as well as certain fragrances and bacteriostatic additives can increase exposure to sunlight. These additives include 6-methylcoumarin, methyl anthranilate, musk and amber. In addition, cosmetics containing photosensitizers may contain dyes such as orange and red, as well as coal tar, naphthalene, tar and other derivatives.
The doctor also points out that many essential oils, such as sandalwood, cedar, lemon, and linden, as well as retinoids found in anti-aging creams and acne products, can also cause photosensitization.
