Sergey Khomyakov, chief physician of INVITRO-Moscow, said that an excessively large stream of light could focus on the macula, the central part of the retina, and cause retinal inflammation.

At the same time, the expert noted that a second glance at the sun with eyes adapted to bright light will most likely not have a negative effect. But the eye is an optical system that focuses light on a small area of the retina, which can cause burns.

The ophthalmologist said that prolonged exposure to sunlight in a snowy area can lead to snowy ophthalmia with lacrimation, pain, pain in the eyes, decreased visual acuity. With such exposure over the years, the ocular surface can be damaged. But Khomyakov said that in central Russia one should not be afraid of such consequences.

At the same time, in the course of evolution, a person has developed a system of protection against the harmful effects of light – he reflexively closes his eyes and turns his head away from excessively bright light, and the pupil narrows to minimum values.

The doctor stressed the need for sunglasses. They protect the eyes from chronic exposure to sunlight. They are especially important for children because they are exposed to high-intensity reflected sunlight, which can permanently damage crystals, the proteins of the lens, and lead to early cataracts in adulthood. At the same time, the doctor notes that the child should be outside in natural light for at least two hours – this prevents the development of myopia and regulates the growth of the eye.
