The technical systems of the smart city consist of four elements. The first element is systems that receive information from the environment, such as video cameras, sensors, meters. They may collect information about the condition of buildings, roads, foot traffic, or air quality.
The second element is a telecommunication infrastructure that enables the transmission of information from sensors to data processing centers where data is analysed. The third element is data centers where information is stored and analyzed. The fourth element is city devices, through which commands from centers can be transmitted, although not necessary.
The first experiments with smart systems in cities began in the late 2000s. IBM started researching within the scope of the Smart Cities program in 2008, and within a year the American conglomerate Cisco joined them with the “Connected Urban Development” experiment. In the following years, several major projects were implemented as part of these programmes, such as the optimization of container traffic in the port of Hamburg and the introduction of new traffic control systems in Amsterdam, San Francisco and Seoul.
