In the field of mechanical engineering, where technology is developing rapidly, the demand for high-quality products that meet the needs of consumers is increasing. The problem is also related to innovation processes in the production of oilfield equipment and research into metalworking technologies. This is especially true for oil companies, where oil production equipment is prone to corrosion and cracking. Scientists from Perm Polytechnic University conducted a study and determined the most suitable steel grade for the manufacture of bimetallic cylinders and submersible pumps. The project is financially supported by the Perm Territory Government.
The results of the study were published in the journal “Problems of Mechanical Engineering and Automation” and included scientists from the Belarusian National Academy of Sciences. The bimetallic material consists of two or more layers of metal and is widely used in various fields, including coin manufacturing, rocket and space technology. It is frequently used in oil well pumps operating in particularly aggressive conditions. In order to improve the competitiveness and service life of bimetallic cylinders, a search is being made for materials that provide durability.
The scientists used benchmarking approaches to characterize materials and determine parameters such as hardness and corrosion resistance for innovative solutions in the fabrication of bimetallic cylinders. They also developed a matrix that takes into account the tasks and needs of consumers. Based on the obtained values, the scientists determined the priorities and ranked the steel grades for the manufacture of bimetallic cylinders. The most suitable material was corrosion-resistant steel 08X17T, which received premium consumer value. The traditional steel grade 38Kh2MYuA also showed good results and took the second place.
This work made it possible to objectively select the most suitable material for the manufacture of bimetallic cylinders and to formulate criteria for further testing. It also increases the competitiveness of enterprises, including Perm companies, in the production of bimetallic products.
