Milos Wagner, vice president of Roskomnadzor, spoke about the misuse of his personal data and expressed his concern about this in St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF). He noted that after looking at a model of a new car on one of the sites and not leaving the links, the next day he received a phone call from a dealership with an offer to buy the car. Emphasizing that the network is monitored by people, Wagner drew attention to the possibility of violating one’s privacy by getting medical and other important data into the wrong hands.
Earlier, Wagner reported that since the beginning of 2023, about 200 million records about Russians have leaked to the network. He also noted that the ministry is working on a compensation mechanism for leak victims through the State Services portal. As part of this mechanism, citizens will be given the opportunity to file a complaint about the leakage of personal data through the portal and bypass the lawsuit and demand compensation directly from the operator. Thus, Gosuslugi will become a platform for interaction between affected and responsible parties in case of personal data leakage.
These statements by Wagner caused a wave of controversy and concern in SPIEF. The problem of misuse of personal data is becoming more and more important and requires appropriate measures to protect the privacy of citizens. One way to solve the problem could be to introduce a compensation mechanism through the State Services that would allow victims to receive compensation for their losses without having to go to court.
