RFID chips have been used in Formula E tires to monitor tire conditions such as temperature and pressure since the sport’s inception.

For the current 2023 season, Formula E has introduced a new car design known as “Gen 3”, as well as a new tire manufacturer that has switched from Michelin to the Hankook iON. These changes were challenging for the teams and potentially prompted Penske to use tools to gather information about rival tires.
