Google will cut jobs in its Waze division, which specializes in navigation services, CNBC has learned.
Earlier this week, the company sent a letter to employees on behalf of Chris Philipps, who oversees the Geo division. He reported that Google would change Waze’s advertising strategy and move away from a separate system. Instead, the company will use Google Ads.
Employee appeal refers to upcoming reductions in roles and segments that are responsible for Waze’s monetization, including analytics, sales, and marketing.
At the same time, it is not reported how many employees will lose their jobs. Now there are more than 500 people in the department.
Philipps also indicated that Google will seek to “create a more scalable and optimized Waze Ads product.”
The company bought Waze in 2013 for $1.3 billion and has 140 million active users.
Late last year, the WSJ wrote about Google’s plans to merge the Waze team and employees working in the Geo division into one team. Then it was pointed out that there would be no cuts.
