The new approach is based on the use of microelectrodes and has allowed researchers to study how the brain processes numbers. A study published in the journal Cell Reports found that individual neurons in participants’ brains were specialized to process certain numbers.
When participants were presented with their preferred number of items in a bitmap, these neurons showed increased activity. The research team’s procedure included adapting existing technologies and using specially configured microelectrode arrays.
Thanks to brain tumor patients who volunteered to study during surgery, researchers have gained unprecedented access to large areas of the brain.
