Researchers have modeled more than 70,000 ecosystem scenarios and found that tipping points known as “regime shifts” are already occurring in more than 20 different ecosystem types. It is worrying that more than 20% of the world’s ecosystems are in danger of disappearing or transforming into something completely different.
The combination of human-induced stresses, population growth, and climate-induced extreme weather events can accelerate these tipping points by up to 80%.
When a collapsed ecosystem creates a domino effect on neighboring ecosystems, the results can be disastrous. The study highlights that these issues need to be addressed urgently, as restoration of the ecosystem in a reasonable time is almost impossible.
