Both devices must be running on the same operating system and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. You don’t need local or cloud backups to transfer your chat history.

In the Messenger settings, you need to find the item “Chats”, the item “Transfer chats”. Then the QR code generated on the old smartphone will need to be scanned with the camera of the new device.

The developers noted that the recommended method of transferring chat history is safe compared to third-party solutions. All data is encrypted only on smartphones and exchange only happens between devices that are on the same local Wi-Fi network.

“Users switching to another phone with the same operating system will be able to transfer WhatsApp data using a local Wi-Fi connection,” one of the developers said.
