Telegram updated its privacy policy on July 8 “to comply with territorial restrictions when showing ads in countries with a large number of Russian-language channels,” the company said in the materials.

Telegram added the ability to target by country to the advertising platform

Additional geographic settings for the target audience of the campaign have appeared in the personal account of the Telegram Ads platform.

The company implemented the changes that were necessary “in the context of the events taking place in Eastern Europe,” writes Durov Code, citing a source close to Telegram. According to him, language-only targeting without the ability to select a country or region “led to inappropriate results for many advertisers and users.”

Country and location targeting is available in the new Target Users menu. The ad will be displayed based on the “roughly defined country and city to which the user’s IP address belongs,” and no other geolocation data will be used, the post notes.
