On Thursday, July 20, popular weather site Gismeteo became inaccessible to users due to a hacker attack. Roman Shmelkin, Gismeteo’s project manager, confirmed that their services in Russia were victims of this attack, but it is not yet clear why they were chosen by the hackers.

Also, sources of Ukrainian hacker activists have published information about upcoming attacks, including Gismeteo. Representatives of the National Computer Incidents Coordination Center (NCCC) claim that they have been warned of this potential attack and have informed market participants.

While the Gismeteo portal was shut down, other services such as Yandex.Weather continued to operate without interruption. Gismeteo provides the user with information about the current weather and future forecasts in various cities in Russia and around the world. The site cooperates with MapMaker SPC, a company that develops software for professional meteorologists and was founded by former employees of Roshidromet’s Main Computing Center.
