Scientists from Moscow State University, together with Yandex Cloud, launched the Chashnikovo carbon test site in the Moscow region. The main aim of this project is to monitor the emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane and to find ways to reduce these emissions. To do this, experts conduct research and set up a meteorological tower.

Scientists from four faculties of Moscow State University work in the testing field: soil science, biology, geography and chemistry. They study gas flow, its effects on soil, and plant respiration. In addition, scientists are working on the problem of “black carbon”, which could exacerbate global warming. Yandex Cloud storage is used to store and process large amounts of data.

The data collected will enable the development of machine learning models to predict emissions and removals of climate-active gases. This will help minimize wildfires, reduce methane emissions from livestock farms and control gas emissions from municipal landfills. The landfill is managed by Moscow State University, which also develops environmental management strategies and technologies for atmospheric carbon sequestration.
