The decision came after a long six-hour public hearing in which city residents expressed both their support and concerns about autonomous vehicles. Companies can now offer a full range of autonomous travel services such as Uber and Lyft by charging passengers.
While supporters highlighted the benefits in terms of safety and accessibility for people with disabilities, opponents raised issues such as traffic disruption, surveillance and possible layoffs.
The CPUC urged companies to immediately address these issues and any incidents.
