Roscosmos recently announced the recruitment of new cosmonauts. According to the head of Roscosmos, Sergey Krikalev, their preparation will take about 6 years.

The training period of astronauts may vary according to their individual abilities and schedules. In the past, there were cases when more than 10 years passed from the moment the detachment joined the flight. However, the previous astronaut recruitment, which took place in 2018, began actively working as part of the crew.

Initially, the training of cosmonauts in Gagarin’s time was much shorter than it is now. But with the development of more complex techniques and the increase in tasks, the preparation was divided into several stages. First there’s general space training, then more detailed work on a particular ship or station, followed by about a year and a half of training as part of the crew.

It takes about 2-3 years to pass nearly a hundred exams that test detailed knowledge of systems and the ability to intervene in possible malfunctions, and as a result, the entire astronaut training process takes about 6 years.
